5 Tips For Coping With Sciatica

Until your sciatica is cured, there are a number of things you can do to make life easier for yourself while treating sciatica:

  1. Avoid sleeping on your stomach as the force of gravity puts pressure on your back. Some people may also have difficulty sleeping flat on their backs. If that is the case, try sleeping on your side, with a pillow in between your legs, or with the aid of a full body pillow.
  2. Do not stay docile for too long. Resting is important, but it is also important to keep your body moving, even if only with light to moderate activity that you can bear.
  3. When sitting, try using a cushion that will help support you in the best position that keeps the pressure off of your sciatic nerve. If possible, use a chair that has adjustable supports. Sitting on a hard surface may further aggravate your condition.
  4. Alternate between the application of heat and cold as necessary to help reduce inflammation and to reduce pain. A cold ice pack will reduce swelling while a heating pad will help to increase blood flow to the affected area.
  5. Perform stretching exercises designed specifically for treating sciatica on a regular basis.
